The Lurgan Blues raced into an early lead when, on five minutes, Trevor Molloy delivered the ball from the left for Tony Grant to beat the offside trap and slot home from eight yards.

They almost doubled their advantage on 20 minutes through Willo McDonagh only for Newry 'keeper Chris Coleman to save the ball with his legs.

Newry levelled, though, on 25 minutes when Richard Clarke slotted home a penalty awarded for a Hugh Dickson handball in the area although Glenavon came close to regaining the advantage soon after when another McDonagh effort was stopped on the line.

Glenavon were reduced to ten men a minute from half-time after Conor Walsh collected his second booking of the game for a foul on Clarke.

The extra man tipped the scales in City's favour 11 minutes after the break when a Dickson slip whilst trying to deal with a Chris Morgan right-wing cross allowed Paul Keenan to shoot them into the lead.
